The Lucanica variety is a form of hulled wheat of the species Triticum dicoccon. The plant is adapted to local conditions in Southern Italy and is included in agrobiodiversity conservation programs.

In scientific literature, the variety is classified as spelt, which distinguishes it from varieties of the Saragolla group belonging to durum wheat. Studies have been conducted on the chemical composition of the grain, including the content of carotenoids and gluten, as well as the morphological parameters of the spikes.
