The variety has the pedigree (Mex × Crane “S”) × Tito and is classified as early-maturing. In field trials, the variety demonstrates high yield, exceeding the performance of older varieties, which makes it a significant representative of modern durum wheat genotypes.

In the scientific community, Messapia is known as a foundation for creating genetic linkage maps when crossed with wild relatives, such as Triticum dicoccoides. These data are applied to mapping traits responsible for grain quality and protein content. The grain of the variety is intended for the needs of the food industry, in particular for the production of pasta and groats.
