The Ben Lear variety was selected from wild plants in the state of Wisconsin in 1900. It belongs to the early varieties of large-fruited cranberry and is not the result of targeted breeding by a specific institution.

The berries are medium to large in size, with an elongated, pear-shaped form with a pointed tip at the pedicel and dark red skin. The flesh of the fruits is moderately firm and is characterized by a high content of anthocyanins and polyphenols.

The variety is high-yielding and suitable for both direct consumption and industrial processing. During long-term storage, the fruits may have lower firmness compared to some other varieties.
