The name HOLAND BREEDBLAD is one of the variants of the historical variety Grote Noordhollandese, which is also known under the names Hollandischer Breitblättriger and A Grosse Graine de Hollande. This variety belongs to traditional landraces rather than modern hybrids.

A key distinctive feature of the variety is leaf morphology, which is reflected in its name: translated from Dutch, Breedblad means "broad-leaved." This distinguishes it from small-leaved wild varieties of Valerianella.
