The plant is a compact perennial with a basal rosette height of 15–20 cm and flower stalks up to 30 cm. The leaves are large, wrinkled, pubescent, and dark green. The flowers have a deep purple-red hue and are gathered into dense spike-like inflorescences.

Flowering begins in late May and can continue until the end of summer if spent flower stalks are removed. The variety is drought-tolerant, belongs to USDA hardiness zone 5, and withstands frost down to -29 °C. It is resistant to damage by deer and rabbits, although it may be susceptible to root rot and powdery mildew in conditions of excessive moisture.

The plant prefers well-drained neutral or alkaline soils and full sun exposure. When planting, the root collar should not be buried. Due to its hybrid origin, seeds do not always retain the varietal traits of the parent plant.
