The variety is native to the Greek island of Kythnos and belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. The letter "N" in the name indicates the dark blue or black color of the berry skin.

Wines made from this variety possess an intense ruby color and characteristic notes of sour cherry and sweet cherry. The variety is a product of folk selection and is authorized for use in winemaking in EU countries.
