The variety is a regional biotype of Sangiovese and is adapted to the microclimate of Tuscany. It prefers a hot, dry climate and well-drained calcareous or clay soils, and possesses good yield potential and a medium ripening period.
The berries have a dark blue color and, as they ripen, acquire a resemblance to a plum. The purpose of the variety is exclusively for wine production. Wines made from it are characterized by roundness, elegance, pronounced acidity, and notes of cherry, prune, violets, and spices.
