The term Spinusa is used as a dialectism to denote maize of the Rostrata group. The main morphological characteristic of these populations is the presence of a pronounced sharp tip on the kernel, from which the name originates, being phonetically similar to the Italian word for "thorn" or "spine."
These plants are not bred varieties, but rather heterogeneous folk forms that have been historically cultivated in the Val Camonica and Val Belluna regions. Varieties with different kernel colors are encountered, including black and light-colored forms.
These populations are traditionally used for the production of high-quality cornmeal used for making polenta. Given that these are folk forms, specialized agronomic characteristics of the plants are often absent or of a generalized nature.
