A fungal disease of broccoli caused primarily by Alternaria brassicicola and A. brassicae, affecting both vegetative organs and marketable heads.

The primary causal agents of the disease are fungi of the genus Alternaria, among which Alternaria brassicicola is considered the most aggressive and frequently dominates in crops. Other species, including A. brassicae, A. alternata, A. japonica, A. arborescens, and A. tenuissima, can also cause infection or act as secondary pathogens.

On the leaves, the disease manifests as dark spots with concentric rings and a yellow halo, which can lead to tissue necrosis. The infection of inflorescences, known as "peppery leaf spot," poses a particular threat to the crop, as black streaks and spots appear on the broccoli heads, reducing the market value of the product and promoting the development of secondary bacterial soft rots.

Seedlings are susceptible to infection of the cotyledons and hypocotyls, which is expressed by the appearance of black necrotic lesions and can lead to plant death. Specific resistance genes in broccoli have not been identified, and breeding efforts are focused on selecting lines with field tolerance, as there is no generally accepted race differentiation for this pathogen.
