Anthracnose of strawberry

Anthracnose is a dangerous quarantine disease of strawberry caused by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum, affecting all plant organs and leading to tissue necrosis and fruit mummification.

The causative agent of the disease is the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum acutatum; cases of infection by C. fragariae and C. gloeosporioides species have also been recorded. The pathogen is subdivided into pathogenicity groups, for the control of which specific resistance genes have been identified in breeding, such as FaRca1 to the first group of isolates, Rca2 to the second group, and FaRCg1 to C. gloeosporioides. The STS-Rca2_240 marker is used for molecular screening of varieties for resistance.

Symptoms appear as sunken dark ulcers on petioles and stolons, leading to the wilting of the plant. Necrotic spots with a purple border or V-shaped sectors appear on the leaves, and flowers wither. Sunken bronze-brown spots form on the berries, which, under high humidity, are covered with characteristic salmon-pink sporulation, while in dry weather, they lead to the mummification of the fruits.
