Bean anthracnose

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

A fungal disease of beans caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, which affects all above-ground parts of the plant and the seeds. It is characterized by the formation of sunken lesions with reddish-brown margins and specific sporulation.

In the reference 375 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the imperfect fungus Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, of which about 8 physiological races are known. The infection persists in plant debris and infected seeds, spreading during the growing season primarily through rain splashes.

Symptoms include the appearance of reddish-brown spots on cotyledons and petioles, blackening of leaf veins, and the formation of characteristic sunken lesions with reddish-brown margins on the pods, in the center of which pink mucilaginous sporulation cushions form under high humidity.

About 40 anthracnose resistance genes have been identified in common bean, designated as Co-1, Co-2, Co-3, Co-4, Co-6, Co-11, Co-12, Co-14, and others. DNA markers are used to confirm the presence of these genes in breeding material and to evaluate the resistance of genotypes.
