Lolium multiflorum Lam.
The main bacterial disease of Italian ryegrass is bacterial wilt, caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas translucens pv. graminis. The disease affects the vascular system, causing a significant reduction in forage yield.
In the reference 19 varieties crop Italian ryegrass, where this is mentioned in the description.
The disease is caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas translucens pv. graminis. The pathogen infects the plant's vascular system, leading to characteristic tissue wilting. Studies have not revealed signs of strain-specific interaction, indicating the absence of a classic gene-for-gene interaction system between bacterial isolates and the crop.
Resistance of Italian ryegrass to bacteriosis is polygenic in nature and is determined by quantitative traits (QTL). The main resistance locus has been mapped to linkage group 4. Candidate genes have been identified in this region, including Pik2-like proteins belonging to the NBS-LRR class, which are involved in the formation of the plant's immune response.
In modern breeding, resistance to bacterial wilt is assessed as a quantitative trait achieved through marker-assisted selection methods. Cultivar descriptions do not use gene letter indices, as the trait is polygenically inherited and associated with the effectiveness of localized QTLs.
