Tomato bacterioses

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato bacterioses represent a complex of pathologies caused by various species of phytopathogenic bacteria, leading to systemic wilting or damage to the aerial organs of plants.

In the reference 69 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Among the most significant diseases is bacterial spot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, which manifests as dark spots on leaves and fruit. Resistance to it is controlled by the Ptr1, Zar1, and Jim2 genes, although breeding efforts are complicated by the high diversity of pathogen races. Another dangerous disease is bacterial canker, the pathogen of which, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, causes vascular wilting or characteristic bird's-eye spots on fruit.

Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is characterized by a rapid loss of turgor and the presence of bacterial exudate in the vessels. In turn, bacterial speck from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato is overcome thanks to the Pto and Ptr1 resistance genes. To evaluate the resistance of breeding lines to these pathogens, classification protocols for high (HR) or intermediate (IR) resistance levels are applied.
