Cultivation
Dianthus caryophyllus L.
A specific group of Border Carnation cultivars selected for their compact habit (30–60 cm) and sturdy flower stems, used for edging flower beds in open ground.
In the reference 7 varieties crop Carnation, where this is mentioned in the description.
Border types of Dianthus caryophyllus differ from cut-flower varieties in their habit, which does not require staking, and in breeding objectives focused on longevity under open-field conditions. To maintain aesthetic appeal and row density, the plants require pinching at a young age, which stimulates branching.
The agronomy of borders using this crop is based on strict adherence to light regimes, as plants lose compactness and become leggy in shade. An important condition is ensuring excellent drainage and a neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH, with stagnant moisture being strictly prohibited.
To maintain a neat appearance of the border, regular pruning of faded flowers is necessary, which prevents the lower stems from becoming bare and stimulates repeat blooming. This practice is an essential element of care, given the biological tendency of carnations toward gradual lignification at the base of the plant.
