Using tulips in borders requires consideration of their seasonal vegetation cycle and the need to mask fading foliage after blooming. The success of the design depends on bulb planting density and proper combination with crops that retain their ornamental value throughout the summer.

The main difficulty with tulip border plantings lies in the natural dieback of the plant's aerial part after flowering.
