Using tulips in borders requires consideration of their seasonal vegetation cycle and the need to mask fading foliage after blooming. The success of the design depends on bulb planting density and proper combination with crops that retain their ornamental value throughout the summer.

The main difficulty with tulip border plantings lies in the natural dieback of the plant's aerial part after flowering. Since the preservation of leaves until they completely dry out is necessary for the formation of a replacement bulb, decorative pruning of the border during this period is impossible, which creates visual gaps.

To maintain the aesthetic appearance of the border, tulips must be combined with perennials or annuals that conceal the fading foliage. The effectiveness of the composition is achieved with a planting density of at least 200–250 bulbs per square meter and careful selection of varieties based on flower stalk height and blooming periods.
