Budding is a development stage during which flower primordia are formed in a plant. In state variety testing protocols, the dates of the onset and full budding stage are recorded, which is visually determined when the trait appears in 75% of plants on the trial plot.
Data on the timing of this stage allows for the classification of varieties by maturity into early-maturing, mid-maturing, and late-maturing.
