Cuttage of New Guinea Impatiens

Impatiens New Guinea Group

Cuttage is the primary method of propagation for this crop, allowing for the preservation of varietal traits in hybrids that are not passed on through seeds. The process is characterized by a high rate of regeneration and does not strictly require the use of hormonal preparations.

For propagation, select healthy apical shoots with two to three internodes. Remove the lower pair of leaves and trim large leaf blades by half to reduce transpiration. A critically important step is the removal of all flower buds, as the plant is prone to a rapid transition to the reproductive phase, which inhibits root system formation.

New Guinea impatiens root easily in water or light substrates such as sand and peat within one to two weeks. The spring period is the most favorable time for cuttage. When working with this crop, it is important to note that the cuttings have a high regenerative capacity; however, they require careful monitoring of shoot condition to maintain vegetative growth and future compactness of the plant.
