Verbena Cuttings

Verbena L.

Cuttings are the primary method of vegetative propagation for verbena, ensuring the preservation of varietal characteristics in hybrids that are not transmitted through seed propagation.

In the reference 22 varieties crop Vervain, where this is mentioned in the description.

Verbena possesses a high capacity for regeneration and the formation of adventitious roots at stem nodes upon contact with a substrate. For propagation, terminal green shoots 7–10 cm long with 4–6 pairs of leaves are used; the lower leaves are removed, and the cut is made directly below the leaf node.

Optimal timing for mass seedling production falls in late February to March, although harvesting cuttings is possible throughout the entire growing season. Under conditions of high humidity, warmth, and diffused light, verbena demonstrates a high rate of rooting, with signs of development appearing within 10–14 days.

The rooting process is most effective in light, moisture-retentive substrates such as a peat and sand mixture, perlite, or pure sand. To maintain the turgor of hollow verbena stems and prevent excessive moisture evaporation when creating a greenhouse effect, regular ventilation is required.
