Hosta scape

For hostas, scape height is measured from the base of the plant to the tip of the inflorescence and varies from short stems in dwarf forms to 1.2 m in large hybrids. Important diagnostic traits include the position of the scape relative to the foliage, the development of leaf-like bracts, and the degree of branching characteristic of individual species, such as H. tibae and H. longipes.

In breeding and variety testing, the coloration of the scape is also recorded, in particular the presence of burgundy or brown shades, known as the red-legged effect. From an agrotechnical perspective, removing scapes in young specimens promotes root system development, while in adult plants it is performed to maintain the decorative appearance of the clump and redistribute resources toward vegetative growth.
