Hosta ploidy determines its morphology and reproductive capabilities. Most species are diploid (2n=60), whereas tetraploid forms (4n=120) are characterized by thicker leaves and a compact habit.

Hosta is characterized by the presence of both diploid and tetraploid forms. Ploidy level determination is carried out using flow cytometry or by counting chromosomes in the root meristem. Hostas are frequently encountered as ploidy chimeras with formulas for the distribution of chromosomal sets across the L1, L2, and L3 tissue layers.

Tetraploid cultivars are distinguished by a thickened leaf texture, increased scape strength, and color intensity. In breeding, crossing diploids with tetraploids is often limited due to hybrid sterility or the formation of non-viable seeds caused by differences in pollen size and chromosome number.
