Carnation flower diameter

Dianthus caryophyllus L.

Flower diameter is a key morphological trait of the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.), used in the assessment of commercial quality and in testing for distinctness, uniformity, and stability.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Carnation, where this is mentioned in the description.

According to UPOV protocols (TG/25/9), this trait is evaluated on a scale where 3 points correspond to small diameter (e.g., variety Hilbrebar), 5 points to medium (Devon Wizard), and 7 points to large (Farida, Komari, Leila). Measurements are performed on fully opened typical flowers using visual assessment or direct measurement.

Diameter values vary depending on the crop type: for remontant large-flowered forms, the indicator is 8–12 cm; for Chabaud group varieties, 4–7 cm; and for miniature forms, it may range from 1.5 to 6 cm. Flower size directly determines the grade and market value of the cut flowers.

In commercial floriculture, to achieve maximum diameter values in large-flowered forms, disbudding is used, removing side buds to redistribute nutrients. In breeding, this morphological parameter is considered in balance with other indicators, such as the number of petals and the overall vase life of the plant.
