Brassica oleracea L. (White Cabbage Group)
Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, is a dangerous vascular disease of cabbage. The disease is manifested by yellowing of the leaves and a characteristic brown ring of affected vessels on the stem cross-section.
In the reference 456 varieties crop White cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.
The disease is caused by the specialized pathogen Fusarium oxysporum Schl. f. sp. conglutinans, which consists of two physiological races. Race 1 is widespread in Europe, while race 2 is considered a more aggressive strain causing significant damage in a number of regions. The fungus infects the plant at any stage of vegetation, penetrating the vascular system and causing loss of turgor, unilateral yellowing, and leaf deformation.
A diagnostic sign of the infection is the presence of a brown or light-brown ring in the tissues of the petioles and stem, formed by the pathogen's mycelium. In cabbage breeding for resistance to the disease, the Foc1 gene plays a key role, controlled using molecular markers such as FocBNUf/r and the SSR marker Ol10-D01. To evaluate the reaction of breeding material to the pathogen, resistance (HR) and susceptibility (S) standards are used.
