Fusarium Wilt of Carnation

Dianthus caryophyllus L.

A dangerous vascular disease of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi. The pathogen is represented by eleven physiological races, of which races 1, 2, 4, and 8 are the most common.

The pathogen infects the vascular system of the plant, causing a systemic disease. The disease often occurs in a latent form, which complicates early diagnosis. Characteristic signs of infection include gradual wilting and curling of the leaves, which take on a grayish tint.

Methods based on PCR and molecular markers are used for the precise identification of the most common races of the pathogen. Since the disease manifests in late stages, when systemic damage becomes irreversible, saving infected plants is practically impossible.
