The causative agents of the disease are soil-borne fungi Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium gibbosum, Fusarium sporotrichiella, Fusarium moniliforme, as well as Fusarium virguliforme and Fusarium brasiliense, which cause sudden death syndrome.
Symptoms on seedlings include browning of the root collar, ulcers on cotyledons, and seedling death. During the flowering and pod-filling stages, wilting is accompanied by loss of turgor, yellowing of leaves, and browning of stem vascular bundles, while a characteristic pink or orange fungal growth develops on pods and seeds.
