Clubroot of crucifers — Chinese cabbage

Brassica rapa L. subsp. chinensis (L.) Hanelt

A fungal disease of Chinese cabbage caused by the pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae, manifesting in the formation of pathological outgrowths on the roots and the disruption of plant nutrition.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Bok choy, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen is an obligate parasite, Plasmodiophora brassicae, which penetrates the root system through root hairs and induces tissue hypertrophy. As a result of the infection, swellings, galls, and outgrowths form on the roots, which eventually decay, blocking the transport of water and nutrients.

External symptoms on the aerial parts include loss of leaf turgor, chlorotic discoloration, and stunted growth. In cases of severe infection, underdevelopment of vegetative mass is observed, and leaves may acquire a specific purple hue.

To control the disease in Chinese cabbage breeding, identification and introgression of resistance genes CRa, CRb, CRA05, and CRd are utilized. Selection of resistant lines is conducted using molecular marker-assisted methods, which allow for the pyramiding of genes into a single genotype to provide protection against various pathotypes of the pathogen.
