Container Cultivation of Carnations

Dianthus L.

Growing carnations in containers requires the use of loose, well-drained substrates with a pH of 5.8–6.5 and ensuring intensive root aeration to prevent rot.

In the reference 43 varieties crop Carnation, where this is mentioned in the description.

The root system of the carnation is characterized by its fineness and high oxygen demand; therefore, when growing in containers, it is critical to avoid waterlogging and moisture stagnation. The substrate must be loose, with a perlite content of up to 15% to maintain an optimal water-air balance, and its moisture level should be periodically reduced, which is achieved by allowing the root ball to dry out every two to three days.

The technology includes mandatory pinching to form a compact plant and light control, as a lack of light leads to elongated shoots. During the growth process, it is necessary to maintain soil salt levels (EC) no higher than 2.0 and follow an irrigation schedule during morning hours without getting moisture on the inflorescences, which is especially important for maintaining plant health in the limited volume of a container.
