Cultivation

Container cultivation of Fuchsia

Fuchsia L.

A method of growing Fuchsia in a restricted volume of substrate, necessitated by its superficial root system and biological inability to overwinter in open ground.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Fuchsia, where this is mentioned in the description.

Fuchsia possesses a fibrous, superficial root system, which makes it physiologically predisposed to a restricted substrate volume, provided that drainage is of high quality. The crop is extremely sensitive to root overheating; therefore, in container cultivation, it is critical to use light-colored pots, provide shading, or employ double-potting to protect against heat stress.

Agronomic practices require the maintenance of stable, moderate moisture in a loose substrate, as stagnant water leads to root rot, while drying out induces leaf and bud drop. Due to active shoot growth, which reaches 50–80 cm per season, the pinching of growing points is a mandatory procedure to stimulate lateral branching and bud formation.

Unlike the year-round maintenance of other container plants, Fuchsia requires a mandatory dormant period in a cool room at a temperature of +5–10°C. The plant poorly tolerates temperatures above +24°C and exposure to direct sunlight, which requires placement in diffused light conditions and regular monitoring of the thermal regime.
