Fuchsia irrigation

Fuchsia requires a constant supply of moisture; however, if water stagnates in the substrate, anaerobic processes develop in the roots. Signs of overwatering, such as wilting leaves, are often mistaken for water deficiency, leading to excessive irrigation and plant death. To ensure optimal moisture exchange, up to 10% perlite is added to the substrate, and ebb-and-flow systems are used in commercial settings.

Physiologically, fuchsia limits transpiration at temperatures above 28°C by closing its stomata. Under such conditions, fine-mist foliar irrigation is more effective for maintaining turgor, as attempting to cool the plant through root zone watering in the absence of evaporation leads to waterlogging. During the active growing season, irrigation is performed once the top layer of soil has dried, whereas during the dormancy period, moisture is restricted to maintain stem viability.

During intensive fertigation, periodic flushing with clean water is necessary to prevent salt accumulation and to monitor the electrical conductivity of the substrate. A crucial characteristic is the plant's critical intolerance to the combination of high temperatures and soil moisture, as well as the dependency of irrigation frequency on the container material: in porous pots, moisture evaporation occurs significantly faster than in plastic ones.
