Fuchsia propagation by cuttings

For propagation, young green apical shoots 5–10 cm in length are used, as woody stems root more slowly and are more prone to rot. Before planting, it is recommended to dry the cuts for 10 minutes and remove the lower leaves. To reduce transpiration and maintain water balance until roots emerge, the leaf blades of the remaining leaves are often partially trimmed.

Given the high sensitivity of Fuchsia tissues to pathogens and the risk of decay in excess moisture, rooting in light, well-drained substrates such as perlite, vermiculite, peat, or sphagnum is preferred over water. The process is most intensive in spring, taking 2–3 weeks, although autumn propagation is also possible provided greenhouse conditions and supplemental lighting are maintained.
