Rescue grass (Bromus catharticus) is classified as a winter annual or short-lived perennial that remains active at temperatures of 4–7 °C. This biological trait allows it to be used to provide forage during the early spring period, when other grasses are still dormant.

The plant is highly palatable due to its soft leaf structure and exceeds perennial ryegrass in crude protein content by 1–2%. Thanks to its bunch-type growth habit and rapid regrowth, the crop is ideally adapted for intensive rotational grazing and hay production.

Unlike smooth brome, rescue grass does not tolerate long-term perennial use, but it is resistant to heavy grazing pressure. When using this crop, it is necessary to consider the risk of injury to animals from the awns of the inflorescences during the full maturity stage.
