Downy Mildew of Pea

Pisum sativum L.

A fungal disease of pea caused by the specialized pathogen Peronospora viciae f. sp. pisi. It manifests in a local form with leaf spotting and sporulation, or in a systemic form causing stunting and plant death.

In the reference 159 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the highly specialized pseudo-fungus Peronospora viciae f. sp. pisi. The disease occurs in two forms: local and systemic. The local form is characterized by the appearance of yellowish spots on leaves and stipules, with a grayish-purple coating on the underside of the blade during humid weather. When pods are affected, chlorotic spots form on them, which eventually turn brown.

The systemic form is considered the most dangerous and often leads to the death of the plant without the formation of pods. In this type of infection, pronounced stunting is observed, and the apical leaves cluster together, giving the plant a resemblance to a cauliflower head. In systemic infection, the coating uniformly covers all above-ground organs. Resistance to the disease in breeding is considered a quantitative trait, as specific resistance genes have not been classified.
