Corm — Crocosmia

When evaluating the quality of Crocosmia planting material, the key parameters are the weight and diameter of the corm. For research purposes, weight categories of 3–5.9 g and 6–9 g are used, with the organ's diameter reaching up to 3 cm. Larger corms weighing 6–8 g contribute to a greater number of flower stalks and flowers, while specimens in the smaller 3–5.9 g category may show better results in terms of flower stalk height when planted in autumn.

The optimal planting depth depends on the size: large specimens are planted at 6–8 cm, and cormels at 3–5 cm. Improper planting depth leads to either desiccation and lodging of flower stalks or delayed germination. Corms are sensitive to waterlogging and Fusarium wilt, which necessitates the provision of high-quality soil drainage. The renewal process includes the formation of a replacement corm above the old one, as well as the development of daughter cormels.
