In ornamental horticulture, double flowering is a varietal characteristic expressed by an increased number of petals in a flower to enhance aesthetic appeal. In the case of blackcurrants, double flowering, or reversion, manifests as a viral disease in which flowers are deformed into purple outgrowths, leaves lose their shape, and the plant becomes sterile.
This trait is assessed as a qualitative phenotypic indicator. In ornamental crops, double flowering is recorded during variety trials either visually or by using scoring systems for ornamental quality. Regarding currants, double flowering is considered a critical symptom, the presence of which requires phytosanitary culling of infected specimens.
Resistance of a variety to pathological reversion is determined by the genetic ability to withstand the virus and its vector, the currant bud mite. When choosing planting material for a garden, preference should be given to varieties with proven genetic resistance, as there are no numerical units of measurement for this trait.
