Variety traits
Miscanthus sinensis Andersson
The ability of Miscanthus sinensis rhizomes to maintain viability at sub-zero temperatures, which determines the yield stability and survival of the perennial in temperate climates.
In the reference 11 varieties crop Chinese silver grass, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess the frost resistance of Miscanthus, the electrical conductivity method is used to determine electrolyte leakage from rhizome tissues, the calculation of the LT50 index at which 50% of tissues die, and the rhizome sprouting method after freezing. Under field conditions, frost resistance is classified according to hardiness zones; most varieties belong to zone 5 with tolerated temperatures ranging from -23°C to -29°C, although some forms are capable of withstanding frosts down to -34°C.
A critical factor for the crop is the preservation of shallow-lying rhizomes during snowless winters, which requires agrotechnical measures or the presence of snow cover. Frost-resistant genotypes adapt to temperature stress by accumulating osmolytes, such as betaine, and maintaining the stability of metabolic processes, which allows them to retain vegetative mass longer and increase biomass productivity.
