Powdery mildew of aster

A fungal disease of asters caused primarily by the pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum, as well as Podosphaera astericola and Podosphaera xanthii. It manifests as a characteristic white coating on the aerial parts of plants, leading to their deformation and loss of ornamental quality.

The primary causative agents of powdery mildew on plants of the genus Aster are fungi of the order Erysiphales, in particular Erysiphe cichoracearum. Studies also document the presence of Podosphaera astericola on certain species, such as Aster spathulifolius, as well as the possibility of infection by the pathogen Podosphaera xanthii.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of a white or grayish-white powdery coating on leaves, stems, and flowers. The infection causes curling and deformation of young leaves, premature wilting, stunted growth, and failure of buds to open. The disease actively develops in the second half of summer and in autumn under conditions of high humidity and insufficient ventilation.
