In asters, double flowering is a false form resulting from the transformation of central tubular florets into ligulate (ray) florets. This trait determines the classification of varieties by their ornamental value, influencing flowering duration and seed productivity.

The trait manifests as the transformation of bisexual tubular florets into sterile ligulate ones. Depending on the degree of replacement, the disc of tubular florets remains visible in single inflorescences, is partially covered in semi-double forms, or is completely hidden in fully double forms, where the capitulum becomes dense.

The assessment of double flowering is conducted using a visual-descriptive method, and the indicator may vary within the same plant depending on the order of the shoot. There is an inverse correlation between the degree of double flowering and the plant's ability to form seeds due to the transformation of reproductive organs into petals.

The degree of trait expression is sensitive to agrotechnical factors. A lack of moisture, unbalanced nutrition, an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, or unfavorable sowing times can lead to a reduction in the degree of double flowering by one level relative to varietal characteristics.
