A fungal disease of garden strawberry caused by the pathogen Podosphaera aphanis. The disease manifests as leaf curling into "boats," the appearance of a whitish bloom on all plant organs, and fruit deformation.

The causal agent of powdery mildew on strawberry is the ascomycete fungus Podosphaera aphanis (synonyms Sphaerotheca macularis, Oidium fragariae). The infection affects the above-ground parts of the plant: a bloom appears on the underside of leaves, leading to their curling, coarsening, and the development of necrosis. Damage to flowers and ovaries impairs pollination, while infected berries acquire a specific off-flavor, odor, and deformed shape.

Strawberry resistance to the pathogen is polygenic and associated with quantitative trait loci (QTL). A key identified locus is 08 To-f, which is diagnosed by molecular markers IB535110 and IB533828. Genes of the MLO family (FaMLO10, FaMLO17, FaMLO20) are involved in the formation of susceptibility, while transcription factors of the FaTGA family, including genes FaTGA1, FaTGA2, FaTGA5, FaTGA7, FaTGA8, and FaTGA10, are responsible for resistance mechanisms.
