Garden strawberry cultivars are classified by ripening time into extra-early, early, early-mid, mid-season, mid-late, and late. Determining the group membership is based on calendar harvest dates or relative indicators, such as the number of days after the onset of flowering, which is approximately 26 days.

In addition to calendar timing, groups are distinguished by their photoperiodic response type: short-day cultivars, which fruit once per season, and remontant or day-neutral cultivars, which are capable of continuous fruiting. Utilizing cultivars from different groups allows for the creation of a berry supply chain, although it requires accounting for the risks of late spring frosts for early cultivars and intensive nutrition for day-neutral cultivars.
