Strawberry Leaf Spots

A group of fungal diseases of garden strawberry, the primary ones being white and brown leaf spot. The diseases manifest as specific necrotic spots on leaves, petioles, and flower stalks, causing premature senescence of the leaf canopy.

White leaf spot, or ramularia leaf spot, is caused by the fungus Ramularia tulasnei. At the initial stage, the disease manifests as small reddish-brown spots, the center of which subsequently lightens and drops out, forming a characteristic 'shot-hole' effect surrounded by a purple border. Both leaf blades and generative organs of the plant are susceptible to infection.

Brown leaf spot is incited by the fungus Marssonina potentillae f. fragariae. Unlike white leaf spot, it is characterized by more diffuse purple or angular spots without a distinct border, on which black conidial acervuli are formed. As the disease progresses, leaves often acquire a reddish hue and dry out prematurely.

Resistance of strawberries to these pathogens is predominantly polygenic and is assessed using field resistance scales under natural conditions. Specific resistance genes or race classifications of leaf spot pathogens for strawberries have not been described to date.
