Tomato Pith Necrosis

A bacterial disease of tomatoes, primarily caused by Pseudomonas corrugata, characterized by pith necrosis, leaf chlorosis, and prolific adventitious root formation.

The disease is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas corrugata, although symptoms can also be triggered by other bacterial species, including P. mediterranea, P. viridiflava, P. cichorii, P. fluorescens, and Pectobacterium carotovorum. No specialized races or pathotypes of this phytopathogen are identified in the classification, and the virulence of isolates varies.

The disease most frequently affects plants in protected cultivation during the early fruiting stage. Key symptoms include the appearance of sunken necrotic streaks on the stem, browning, liquefaction, or decay of the internal pith, as well as plant wilting and the formation of numerous adventitious roots in the affected areas.

Currently, there are no tomato cultivars with genetic resistance to pith necrosis. There have been no breeding achievements in this trait; therefore, primary crop protection is based on strict adherence to agrotechnical practices and the management of nitrogen nutrition, humidity, and temperature regimes.
