The seeding rate of soybean determines plant population density and balances the productivity of an individual plant with the competitiveness of the crop. Optimal values depend on the maturity group, moisture availability, and method of sowing.

For soybean, the choice of seeding rate is directly linked to the maturity group: early-maturing varieties require a higher plant density than mid-maturing ones. The range of rates, for example, 450–500 thousand viable seeds per hectare, is adjusted based on conditions: in cases of high drought probability, the lower end of the range is preferred to reduce competition for moisture, while favorable moisture conditions allow for increased density.
The method of sowing also influences rate calculation: when switching from row drilling to wide-row sowing (45–70 cm), the plants' need for nutritional area must be taken into account. Excessive stand density increases the risk of lodging and reduces the number of pods per plant, while sparse stands lead to low pod set, which complicates mechanized harvesting. The optimal rate should ensure a stable protein and oil yield while maintaining harvesting efficiency.
