The seeding rate of peas determines the final plant population density due to the crop's lack of tillering. An optimal density for harvesting is considered to be 60–100 plants per m².
In the reference 17 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.
Due to the lack of tillering in peas, plant population density is almost entirely determined by the seeding rate. Reducing the rate below 60 plants per m² increases weed infestation, while excessive rates lead to shading, lodging, biomass damping-off, and a decrease in the productivity of individual plants.
Technologically, the seeding rate influences the attachment height of the lowest pod: increasing it simplifies combine harvesting but reduces the number of pods and seeds per plant. Target values range from 0.8–1.0 million viable seeds per hectare in arid steppe regions to 1.2–1.4 million in the forest-steppe zone.
When calculating the rate, the thousand-seed weight, expected field emergence, and soil moisture availability are taken into account. With good moisture reserves, it is recommended to increase the rate by 5–10%, and the final calculation is based on achieving a target seedling density of 70–110 viable seeds per m².
