Bean Irrigation

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Bean irrigation is a critical yield factor, requiring soil moisture maintenance at 65–75% of field capacity (FC). The most vulnerable growth stages to water deficit are budding and flowering.

In the reference 29 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

Common beans are highly demanding of moisture levels, especially during the budding and flowering periods. Water deficiency at these times leads to a shortened flowering period, a reduction in the number of pods and seeds, and lower seed weight. The optimal regime is considered to be maintaining soil moisture at 65–75% of field capacity, as a decrease in these levels to 40% causes a significant drop in productivity.

An important specific feature of beans is their sensitivity to irrigation water temperature, which should be no lower than 18°C. The use of cold water combined with excessive moisture promotes the development of pathogens. To prevent diseases, it is preferable to avoid overhead irrigation, applying water to the roots or between rows, which also allows for the effective combination of irrigation with inoculation by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
