Irrigation determines the market quality of black radish by preventing coarseness, excessive bitterness, and root cracking. A consistent moisture regime is critical to prevent premature bolting of the plant.
In the reference 13 varieties crop Black radish, where this is mentioned in the description.
Black radish is highly sensitive to moisture deficiency and sharp fluctuations in the water regime, which leads to the formation of tough roots with high bitterness. A lack of water during the growing season triggers a stress response, causing the plant to enter the flowering phase and bolt instead of developing a marketable root. At the same time, waterlogging is unacceptable, as it causes rotting and the development of fungal diseases.
The highest demand for moisture occurs during the period of active root formation. In the first 30 days after emergence, irrigation is carried out frequently, approximately every other day, to maintain stable soil moisture. As the plants mature, the frequency of irrigation is reduced to 1–2 times per week or 2–3 times per month, depending on the variety and weather conditions. It is necessary to avoid the formation of a soil crust, and the water consumption is approximately 10 liters per 1 sq. m.
The high dependence of succulence and the absence of internal voids in the roots on the moisture regime makes drip irrigation the preferred method of watering. This method allows for controlled water delivery, preventing the alternation of soil drying and waterlogging, which is the primary cause of root cracking in this crop.
