Tomato Irrigation

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato irrigation requires a differentiated approach to maintaining soil moisture: from 65–70% of field capacity (FC) at the beginning of the growing season to 80–85% FC during the fruit development and ripening stages.

In the reference 99 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Stability of the water regime is critical for tomatoes, as sharp fluctuations in soil moisture trigger fruit cracking and a reduction in fruit weight. The plant does not tolerate waterlogging, which impairs root system aeration; therefore, irrigation must be balanced with ventilation regimes to prevent fungal diseases.

Drip irrigation is the optimal method, as it allows for the maintenance of the water-air regime without excessive runoff and enables efficient fertigation. When using drip systems, the irrigation water temperature should be +20–25°C, and it is not recommended to let it drop below +15–16°C.
