Field Pea Cultivation

Pisum sativum L.

Field pea cultivation technology is based on its cold hardiness, nitrogen-fixing ability, and high sensitivity to moisture deficiency during the budding and flowering phases.

In the reference 38 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

Peas are characterized by high cold hardiness, which allows sowing the crop at soil temperatures from +2...+5 °C, while seedlings are capable of withstanding frosts down to -4...-7 °C. An important feature is the symbiosis with root-nodule bacteria, which requires avoiding excessive mineral nitrogen fertilizers, as they inhibit nitrogen fixation and stimulate vegetative growth to the detriment of bean yield.

Due to low competitiveness against weeds in the initial stages of development, peas require strict phytosanitary control and adherence to crop rotation, with a return to the same field no earlier than 4–6 years to prevent soil fatigue and the accumulation of specific pathogens, such as Ascochyta blight and Sclerotinia rot.

Crop yield depends critically on moisture availability during the budding and flowering periods; a lack of moisture at this time leads to massive ovary drop. Given the crop's tendency to stem lodging, specialized semi-leafless (afila) varieties or agronomic methods to minimize harvest losses are used in open field conditions.
