Red fescue is characterized by a winter development type, which prevents the formation of generative shoots in the year of sowing. The plant requires exposure to cold to complete the vernalization stage, after which it produces exclusively vegetative biomass during its first year of life.
In agronomic practice, there are no spring forms of red fescue capable of producing seeds without a preliminary winter period. The stand reaches maximum productivity in the second or third year of life, making the classification into winter and spring forms biologically inapplicable to this crop.
