Spring sowing remains the dominant cultivation method for small-seeded Vicia faba var. minuta forms due to their limited winter hardiness. Winter forms require regions with a mild winter climate and are sown at the beginning of the rainy season, whereas in zones with severe winters, the crop is cultivated exclusively as a spring crop.

The choice of sowing form determines the phytosanitary profile of the crop. Winter forms show increased susceptibility to chocolate spot, caused by Botrytis fabae; however, by passing through critical developmental phases earlier, they effectively avoid damage by the bean aphid Aphis fabae compared to spring sowings.
