The Asian pear scab pathogen Venturia nashicola is a distinct species that does not infect the common pear. Currently, seven races of the pathogen have been identified, which exhibit varying virulence toward differential Asian pear genotypes.
Symptoms of the infection include olive-brown velvety spots on leaves, fruit deformation and cracking, as well as the formation of lesions on shoots. In breeding programs, resistance genes Rvn3 and Vn have been identified, and the role of protein kinases, such as PyCDPK19, in the plant's defense response has been established.
